Our youth (and other church members who are interested) will participate in the Relay for Life, a 24-hour walk done in teams/shifts to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The event will be held June 2-3 at the Haverford Reserve from 12pm-12pm. Each team member will responsible for paying a $10 registration fee and then they are asked to raise $100 each, but it is not required and they are not strict on this at all. There are monthly team rallies which start in January for which they encourage at least one team member to attend but again it is not required. With youth teams they do require 1 adult for every 7 kids to be there at all times during the relay -- our leaders will take turns with this and we would also welcome parents to help out. Here is a link to help you get a good idea of what the relay is: http://www.relayforlife.org/learn/WhatIsRelay/index. Joe has signed us up as "AUMC Youth Group."
The group seemed very excited about this. Each member can raise money on his/her own, but we will also be doing a few fundraisers -- like a bake sale -- to help raise general team funds. There will be activities throughout, and we plan to have tents set up to provide rest and shelter for those not walking at any given time. And, walkers do not have to walk all 24 hours!! This is a relay, so we will take turns having team members walking the track, and we will have a sign up schedule ahead of time. Friends are welcome to join our team as well, and visitor/cheerers are welcome, too! Joe may even be providing some music when he's not walking! We will give out more info as we know it.
Also, one final reminder: Our UM camps offer Winter Retreat weekends for youth -- sessions for both younger and older kids. Camp Innabah outside of Pottstown is the closest one, and the retreat weekend there is Jan. 20-22. Youth grades 2-5 are in one session and the cost is $85 for the weekend; grades 6-9 are in another session and the cost for them is $125, but theirs includes an afternoon of snow tubing at Great Bear mountain. There is also a Women's Retreat that same weekend for $130, with relaxation techniques, bible study and fellowship. All include 2 nights lodging in insulated, heated lodges with indoor bathrooms, and all meals in the dining hall, plus activities and crafts of course. As mentioned before, we would like to include as many of our youth this year as possible. (It's also a great way to get familiar with one of our UM camps for summer sessions!) Here's the link for registration information: http://www.innabah.org/innabah-retreats/ -- NOTE: there are still openings and still time to register!!
Feel free to contact any one of the Youth Group Leaders (Stacy, Clare and Joe) with questions or suggestions. Thanks for your support! We hope to see you at our meetings.
