About the Event
Please join us on Saturday, April 9th at 2pm in the Wesley Room for “The Sacred Art of Pysanky” organized by Michelle Flamer.
When Michelle Flamer was about 15 years old, she attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls and met many new friends, including a very special young woman named Alice. Alice is Ukrainian and many years later changed her name to Lesia, to honor her Ukrainian heritage. Lesia taught her how to make pysanky (PIH-sohn-kee), the beautifully ornate and shiny Easter eggs made by Ukrainian women for Easter.
Pysanky is more than a craft-it is a spiritual endeavor. The eggs contain symbols of Christianity and are intend-ed to bless the recipient. Before making an egg, many Ukrainian women make the sign of the cross and say “God Help Us” to invoke God’s blessings that the recipient will believe the truth of the Gospel.
