About the Event

Please join us on Saturday, April 9th at 2pm in the Wesley Room for “The Sacred Art of Pysanky” organized by Michelle Flamer.

When Michelle Flamer was about 15 years old, she attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls and met many new friends, including a very special young woman named Alice. Alice is Ukrainian and many years later changed her name to Lesia, to honor her Ukrainian heritage. Lesia taught her how to make pysanky (PIH-sohn-kee), the beautifully ornate and shiny Easter eggs made by Ukrainian women for Easter.

Pysanky is more than a craft-it is a spiritual endeavor. The eggs contain symbols of Christianity and are intend-ed to bless the recipient. Before making an egg, many Ukrainian women make the sign of the cross and say “God Help Us” to invoke God’s blessings that the recipient will believe the truth of the Gospel. Michelle cannot explain this but the experience of patiently covering a white egg with layers of beeswax and dye bring her closer to God. She hopes you can join her on Saturday, April 9, 2022at 2:00 PM for a three hour work-shop on pysanky in the Wesley Room at AUMC. She is not an expert and encourages you to google YOUTUBE videos before the class so you become familiar with the technique.

Michelle will provide all materials: medium point kistka (the stylus used for application of the beeswax),eggs, beeswax, and dyes. A tall, long burning candle on a stand is also needed but two can share-if you have a candle please bring it!

As Ukraine continues under assault by the Russian dictator, we can pray for justice, peace and healing. I will donate all materials required for the class but we will take up a collection from class participants which can be donated

through UMCOR. This workshop will be limited to ten, first come first serve and is for adults only (including teens). Please let Michelle in the church office know in advance if you plan to participate; however, if you have any questions about this class please contact Michelle Flamer at 215-850-3610.
